But those veteran nominees aren't the only ones making this year's show especially exciting. Several newcomers have picked up first-time nods in major categories as well.

Olivia Dean will vie for a trophy for Best New Artist alongside fellow breakout stars Katseye, The Marías, Addison Rae, sombr, Leon Thomas, Alex Warren and Lola Young

Plus, Lola's hit "Messy" is up against Justin Bieber ("Daisies"), Sabrina ("Manchild"), Lady Gaga ("Disease") and Chappell ("The Subway") in the Best Pop Vocal Performance category.

For sombr, being recognized with a Best New Artist nod by the Recording Academy is a symbol of how far he's come in his career so far.

"I am so proud to be recognized among so many amazing artists that I love and respect," he wrote in a Nov. 6 Instagram post, noting that he has "lived and breathed music" since he was a kid. "This time last year, I was 19, depressed and not knowing where to turn. I wrote all of these songs on my own in my bedroom. Looking back, I am so thankful to everyone who encouraged me to keep going."
