Jana Nayagan Movie Release Date: Before ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay makes a full-fledged transition into politics, the superstar is preparing for his final big-screen appearance with Jana Nayagan. One of the most eagerly awaited Tamil films of the year, the movie is expected to open to huge numbers.

Scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, Jana Nayagan is far more than a routine star vehicle. The film marks the end of an era in Tamil cinema as it is Vijay’s farewell project. The H Vinoth directorial will face a major box-office clash with Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, which releases a day later.

According to Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan has registered a strong start at the box office even before release. The film has sold 2,73,460 tickets in advance bookings for its opening day. With 2,297 shows and Rs 7.27 crore collected from advance sales at an average ticket price of Rs 215, the Tamil movie is clearly dominating booking trends nationwide.

The Hindi-dubbed version of the film, titled Jan Neta, continues to lag significantly behind the Tamil release. So far, the Hindi version has sold only 79 tickets across 15 shows, earning Rs 22,410.

BookMyShow reports that tickets for early shows at several single-screen theatres — including Gopalan Grand Mall, Gopalan Cinemas, V Cinema, Sri Vinayaka, Cinephile HSR Layout, Sri Krishna, and Brundha RGB — are already sold out. In Karnataka, first-day-first-show (FDFS) screenings are set to begin at 6 am.

Sharing insights, the makers stated, “Over the past decade, Vijay’s films have consistently performed well at the box office. His mass appeal in Tamil Nadu is unmatched, and we believe Jana Nayagan will follow the same trend. In Tamil Nadu, FDFS shows will begin at 9 am, unlike some other states.”

Ticket pricing has become a major talking point ahead of the release. In Karnataka, single-screen FDFS tickets are reportedly being sold for as high as Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,800. In contrast, theatres in Tamil Nadu must adhere to government-regulated pricing, with ticket rates capped at Rs 190.

The film is witnessing impressive traction overseas as well. As per Sacnilk, advance bookings for Jana Nayagan in international markets have reportedly crossed Rs 25 crore, signalling an impressive global opening.

Taking reserved seating and booking momentum into account, Jana Nayagan is currently targeting an opening-day collection of Rs 10.05 crore, with expectations of further growth closer to release.

Jana Nayagan marks Thalapathy Vijay’s last film before his full-fledged political entry.

Just days ahead of its Pongal release, Jana Nayagan has been caught in an unexpected controversy. Vijay’s film, along with Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, is facing unprecedented delays in receiving certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The delay has also highlighted underlying political tensions between TVK and the DMK ahead of the Tamil Nadu elections.

With barely two to three days left for release, both Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi remain uncertified, triggering concern and chaos within the Tamil film industry. Despite being among the most anticipated Pongal releases, neither film has received final clearance.

Vijay’s previous films have also encountered political controversies and legal challenges, making this situation familiar yet alarming, even for a superstar preparing to enter politics full-time.

Jana Nayagan is scheduled for a grand release on January 9, while Parasakthi arrives on January 10. The makers of Jana Nayagan submitted the film to the CBFC on December 18, well in advance. Although the board suggested minor edits — which were accepted by the filmmakers — the certificate is yet to be issued.

In response, KVN Productions has moved the Madras High Court, filing an urgent petition seeking immediate intervention. The court has scheduled a hearing at 2:15 pm on Wenesday to address the matter.

Jana Nayagan is being positioned as a political action drama. The film boasts a powerful multi-industry ensemble cast including Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.

Produced by KVN Productions on an estimated Rs 300-crore budget, the film is directed by H. Vinoth.
