What happened

Microsoft has announced Project Zenith, a new developer-focused Windows 11 experience designed to offer a ready-to-code and distraction-free environment on developer-class devices with at least 64 GB of unified memory and more than 250 GB/s of memory bandwidth.

Recently used files and folders and sync provider tips will be turned off, while Command Palette will be enabled in Search and Start. Microsoft said the experience is not intended to prescribe a particular development workflow. Developers will continue to be able to customise their systems around their preferred tools, languages and frameworks. As AI models become more capable, agentic coding workflows require continuous computing resources.

“Project Zenith represents Windows at its best – listening to developers, responding with purpose and working across our ecosystem to raise the bar for what a developer PC can be,” Logan Iyer, corporate vice president, Windows Platform + Developer, said in a blog post on Friday. Project Zenith comes with a preconfigured Windows setup and a collection of development tools covering programming languages and runtimes, source control, and productivity tools.

Windows Terminal and Visual Studio Code, the two distinct developer tools will be pinned to the taskbar by default, giving developers immediate access to commonly used tools. Microsoft said that it has also configured Windows settings specifically for development. File Explorer will show file extensions, hidden files, the full path in the title bar and the details pane, and enable long-path support.

Microsoft said running some AI workloads locally could help reduce cloud token consumption while allowing more demanding tasks to be handled by frontier models. With at least 64 GB of unified memory and more than 250 GB/s of memory bandwidth, Project Zenith devices are designed to run capable coding models locally and without metered usage, the company said.

The company said the combination of WSL, Windows Developer Configurations, Intelligent Terminal and expanded on-device AI capabilities is aimed at creating a more streamlined starting point for developers. Project Zenith is expected to expand to more devices in the coming months as Microsoft works with its OEM and silicon partners.
