IIT Madras-backed Bodhan AI launches four open-weight

What happened

IIT Madras-incubated Bodhan AI on Friday said it has launched four foundational artificial intelligence (AI) models for Indian languages in partnership with AI4Bharat, ET Online reports. It said that this comes as the startup seeks to build a common technology layer for education-focused AI applications. The models cover speech recognition, speech generation, machine translation and optical character recognition.

Students can interact with the bot via text or voice across 22 Indian languages, using textbook content to provide explanations, examples, and assessments. The Teacher Assistant Bot is designed to help educators create lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, homework and revision material.

Why it matters

Bodhan AI said they will be available as open-weight models as well as hosted APIs on sovereign digital infrastructure, enabling startups, edtech companies, researchers and government institutions to build and customise applications. The models form part of the Bharat EduAI Stack, which Bodhan AI is positioning as sovereign digital public infrastructure for India's multilingual education ecosystem.

“Bodhan AI aims to build with the ecosystem, not compete with it,” said Mitesh Khapra, Principal Investigator at Bodhan AI. Furthermore, the models have been trained and optimised using NVIDIA's Nemotron open models and libraries, including the NVIDIA NeMo framework for automatic speech recognition, machine translation and OCR. The models are also being served using NVIDIA TensorRT-LLM and vLLM inference microservices.

NVIDIA and Bodhan AI are working on datasets, training methods and evaluations for future foundational models for Indian languages. Meanwhile, Bodhan AI has also launched two applications based on the models: Student Tutor Bot and Teacher Assistant Bot. The Student Tutor Bot is designed for students in Classes 6-12 and is based on the NCERT and SCERT curricula.

What to watch

Bodhan AI said teachers would remain in control of the process, with AI-generated material intended as a starting point that can be reviewed, edited, regenerated or discarded rather than used to make automated classroom decisions. “India’s AI journey cannot be built on technology alone.

Bodhan AI confirmed that the infrastructure is being designed with a focus on data privacy and sovereign deployment, including data anonymisation protocols and compliance with applicable national education data frameworks.
