In less than five months, ace swimmer Bula Chowdhury’s home at Hind Motor in West Bengal’s Hooghly district has been broken into for a second time, the Padma Shri awardee said on Sunday.

On August 15, 2025, over 290 of her medals were stolen from the house. Two people were later arrested for the theft and the medals were recovered.

According to Chowdhury, she had gone to her brother’s house nearby to attend a puja on Saturday. On her return, she saw the house ransacked and the window grills broken.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Chowdhury said, “What can I say, even with police security, people are breaking in. I am staying in Kolkata. So that is a big problem. I had gone to my brother’s house. So I thought, ‘Why not go home and get some of the winter clothes?’… “

“The police had posted two civic volunteers after the theft, but it’s all the same. There is no law and order. There is nothing left of my house. They have broken taps and basins. I have not repaired anything. I am completely in trauma. If I stay here, there is also a risk to my own life.”

“I used to think about how many medals I would win, but now I think I am going to set a record in the number of times thieves enter and ransack my house,” she added.

Chowdhury said she filed a complaint at the Uttarpara police station and that an investigation into how intruders had broken into the house despite the security was underway.

“The inspector in charge visited my home and collected some evidence,” she said. The police have not issued any official statement about the incident, though sources said that an investigation was underway.
