Jana Nayagan Release Date Hearing LIVE Updates: Jana Nayagan's fate to be decided by the Supreme Court.
Jana Nayagan Movie Release Date News Live Updates: The legal battle between the makers of Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan and CBFC is all set to witness its next chapter as the matter will now be heard by the Supreme Court on Thursday. The film, which was initially slated for a January 9 release, was held back when the CBFC held back the certification. The producers, KVN Productions LLP, filed a writ petition against the non-issuance of a certificate by the CBFC.
The Vijay-starrer was submitted for certification on December 24 to the CBFC. The examining committee recommended that the film be given a U/A 16+ certification after implementing the 27 suggested changes, which the makers accepted. However, on January 5, the CBFC Chairperson referred the movie to a Revising Committee saying that a complaint has been received.
Justice PT Asha of the Madras High Court heard arguments from both sides and said that her decision will be announced on the day of the release, causing the initial delay. Then, Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaresan, who was representing the CBFC, informed the court that the certification process had been reopened after a dissenting member of the examining committee submitted a complaint to the CBFC chairman. The member argued that his objections had not been properly recorded, which led the chairman to put the film in front of a revising committee.
While Sundaresan argued that the chairman was well within his rights to send the film to the revising committee, the single judge’s order directed CBFC to grant the film its certification. The judge said that once the certificate had been granted, the decision of setting up a revising committee was “without jurisdiction.” The judge also added, “After examining materials, it is crystal clear that the complainant’s grievance appears to be an afterthought”.
However, the CBFC appealed against the order and said that they did not have enough time to file their reply. A division bench put the previous directive on hold, staying the film’s clearance. The matter is now scheduled to be heard by the High Court on January 20 after the Pongal holidays while the Supreme Court will take up the plea today. This is Vijay’s last film before he joins politics.
