Police have arrested an auto-rickshaw driver who was absconding in connection with the hit-and-run case that led to the death of a retired Lieutenant General in Panchkula.
The accused has been identified as Om Prakash, a native of Churu district in Rajasthan and presently residing in Saketri.
As per SHO Mansa Devi police station, Inspector Munish Kumar, a detailed investigation was done in this matter, and after thorough CCTV footage and probing other aspects, the accused was traced.
According to the police, the victim’s wife, a resident of Panchkula, had lodged a complaint at Mansa Devi police station on January 10. In her complaint, she stated that on January 9, her husband, Lt Gen (retd) K S Mann, was hit by an auto-rickshaw. He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Acting on the matter, the police registered a case under Sections 281, 125(B) and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and began an investigation.
During the probe, police identified the accused on January 13 and arrested him the next day.
Expressing grief over the incident, DCP Srishti Gupta said that police patrolling would be intensified, special drives would be launched against speeding and reckless driving, additional police personnel would be deployed at accident-prone and sensitive locations, and strict action would be taken against traffic rule violators.
She added that citizens would also be made aware about road safety to prevent recurrence of such tragedies.
Mansa Devi police station in-charge Inspector Munish Kumar said aggressive patrolling is being carried out in the MDC area, especially in Sectors 4 and 6, Mahadev Pura, areas adjoining Sukhna Lake and market places. He said this has helped in effectively curbing crime.
He said authorities have also written to concerned departments for installation of traffic lights and CCTV cameras at major junctions to further strengthen road safety and law and order in the area.
Police said further investigation in the case is underway.
