In view of the severe cold wave and continuous drop in temperatures, the District Health Department in Punjab’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Friday issued a comprehensive health advisory for residents to protect themselves from cold-related health risks.

Dr Gurinderjeet Singh, Civil Surgeon, said negligence towards health during winter can lead to serious medical complications. Dr Singh stated that prolonged exposure to cold can be particularly dangerous for elderly people, young children, and patients with heart conditions.

He advised vulnerable groups to avoid walking in the morning and late evening, especially during periods of intense cold and fog.

Highlighting the risks to children, he said that they are more susceptible to pneumonia during winter, while cold exposure can also lead to ailments such as vomiting and diarrhoea. He advised parents to ensure that children wear adequate warm clothing, fully covering the body, along with caps and socks.

Stressing the importance of proper clothing, Dr Singh advised people to wear multiple layers of light clothing instead of a single heavy layer, as tight or heavy garments can restrict blood circulation and reduce the body’s ability to retain warmth.

Dr Rakesh Pal, District Epidemiologist, appealed to the public to consume warm liquids such as tea, milk, and soup in abundance during winter to maintain body temperature. He also emphasised the intake of vitamin C–rich fruits and vegetables to strengthen immunity.

Health officials also advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement, follow a healthy diet, adhere to weather advisories issued by the Meteorological Department, and ensure proper ventilation while using room heaters.

The Health Department warned that burning fire pots or coal in closed rooms is extremely dangerous, as it produces carbon monoxide, which reduces oxygen levels and can be fatal. People were also cautioned against alcohol consumption during winter, as it lowers body temperature and increases the risk of hypothermia.

The District Health Department appealed to citizens to remain vigilant, adopt preventive measures, and seek immediate medical attention for any cold-related health issues.
