The Chandigarh district court complex at Sector 43 received a bomb threat email on Friday, nearly four months after the Punjab and Haryana High Court received a similar bomb threat email, police said.
Police said the message, sent via email at 11:55 am, warned of an attack, prompting police to act swiftly. The court premises were completely evacuated, both main gates were shut, and the entire area was sealed off for security, police said.
A police officer confirmed that the threat had been received, but did not disclose the identity of the recipient, stating “the matter is under investigation by the cyber unit of the Chandigarh Police”.
Officials said no suspicious object was found during an extensive inspection by bomb disposal squads, senior police officers, and multiple security teams, and ruled out any immediate danger.
They said the email threatened a bomb attack using a drone to target the court complex. Police said security around the court premises would remain tight, and efforts were underway to trace the email sender.
Sources said the email claimed that a bomb would be dropped to blow up the court complex, leading to the deployment of anti-sabotage teams, a thorough search operation, and the evacuation of all occupants.
Speaking with The Indian Express, District Bar Association president Ashok Chauhan said, “The district court had faced such threats earlier too. Stronger security measures are required, along with checking machines at the main entrance of the court complex, rather than inside the premises.”
In August, officials received an email warning of an “explosion” at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Sources said the sender had threatened multiple blasts, specifying that they would occur around 1:35 pm, which triggered a massive search on the high court complex.
In May, the high court received a bomb email, which turned out to be a hoax, after which the Chandigarh Police registered an FIR against unidentified persons.
