British former boxing heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua was injured in a car accident in Nigeriathat claimed the lives of two people, his promoter and police both said

The 36-year-old boxer suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash, local police said, adding that they are investigating the accident's cause.

"We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don't want to speculate on how he is," his promoter told British newspaper the Daily Mail, adding that the 36-year-old "appears OK" from the pictures circulating online.

Lanre Ogunlowo, police commissioner for Ogun State, told the Associated Press that Joshua had been admitted to an undisclosed hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Gbenga Omotoso, the information commissioner for Lagos State, extended his condolences to the families and friends of the two men who died in the car crash, who he said were foreign nationals.

A spokesperson for Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Corps, preliminary information suggest the vehicle to be driving faster than the speed limit, before losing control trying to overtake another car and crashing into a truck that was located by the side of the road.

The accident took place in Ogun State, on a major road linking the region to Nigeria's economic center, Lagos. It occurred some 50 miles (80 kilometers) away from a board school Joshua attended as a child, before returning to the UK at 12.

According to Nigeria's Punch newspaper, the car the boxer was in collided with a truck.

Commissioner Omotoso said that Joshua and three other individuals "were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu" in Ogun state at the time of the incident.

The crash comes one week after Joshua beat social media star Jake Paul in a bout in Miami, which marked Joshua's return to the ring after 15 months.

Former Olympic champion Joshua is expected to face long-time rival Tyson Fury next year.
