A day after the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi temporarily suspended visa and consular operations in the national capital as well as Agartala, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma was summoned by the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday to convey Dhaka’s “grave concern” over the situation.
Verma was summoned to convey the Bangladesh government’s concerns over the “regrettable incidents outside the perimeter of the Bangladesh High Commission and residence in New Delhi on 20 December 2025, and the acts of vandalism at the Bangladesh Visa Centre in Siliguri on 22 December 2025 by different extremist elements”, the ministry said in a statement. Bangladesh also expressed “deep concern over violent protests” staged outside the premises of its different diplomatic missions in India.
There has been no reaction from the Indian side yet.
The development comes a day after the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi “temporarily suspended” consular and visa services on Monday, a day after Indian visa operations in Chittagong were suspended indefinitely.
The tit-for-tat move came in the wake of unrest across Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a leader of the protests that led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government in 2024.
India and Bangladesh have also countered each other on a reported protest outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi. While India has denied any security breach, Bangladesh has “entirely rejected” the statement.
In its statement on Tuesday, the Bangladesh foreign ministry said it “condemns such acts of premeditated violence or intimidation against diplomatic establishments, which not only endanger the safety of diplomatic personnel but also undermine the principles of mutual respect and values of peace and tolerance”.
The Bangladesh government also called upon the Indian government to conduct “a thorough investigation” into the incidents and “to take all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such acts and to ensure safety and security of Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions and related facilities in India”.
The statement also said that Bangladesh expects India to “immediately take appropriate steps in accordance with its international and diplomatic obligations to safeguard the dignity and security of diplomatic personnel and establishments”.
