A 30-year-old woman was shot dead allegedly by her husband inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi on Monday. Police said her husband has been arrested and two policemen have been suspended for negligence.
Police said the woman, Soni Yadav (28), had purportedly run away with another man before being traced and brought to the station when her husband, Anoop Yadav (30), turned the gun on her.
A police officer said that when Anoop was asked about the motive behind the murder, he allegedly replied, “Mujhe kuch achha nahi lag raha tha (Nothing felt right).”
According to police, Anoop, a farmer, had lodged a complaint stating that his wife had gone away with a distant relative. Based on his complaint, a case was registered at the Pali police station under BNS Section 87, which pertains to kidnapping, abduction, or inducing a woman to compel her marriage.
On Sunday, police traced Soni but she claimed she had gone of her own free will. She reached the police station on Monday, where her medical examination was scheduled to be conducted and her statement was to be recorded.
Police said she was standing near the police station mess, talking to her husband, 14-year-old son, her sister and uncle, when Anoop suddenly took out a country-made pistol that he had been carrying and shot her in the back.
Police said she was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Anoop was arrested and the weapon used in the crime was seized from his possession.
Superintendent of Police, Hardoi, Ashok Kumar Meena, said the Additional Superintendent of Police has been directed to carry out a detailed inquiry into all aspects of the case.
Taking serious note of the incident, the SP also suspended the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Vikram Chaudhary, along with a woman constable, Sanjana Rajput, who was assigned to the woman’s security.
Police said the man with whom Soni had gone is yet to be traced.
