Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has issued a firm directive to the police to handle cases involving crimes against women and children with the highest level of care and sensitivity. He stressed that the instruction must be followed in letter and spirit.
At a function organised by the Police Department at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium in Kotturpuram on Saturday (January 3, 2026), he presented appointment orders to 20 selected candidates as a symbolic gesture, marking the issuance of appointment orders to a total of 750 candidates — comprising 621 Assistant Sub-Inspectors of Police and 129 Fire and Rescue Services Station Officers — selected through the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board.
Addressing the new recruits and senior police officers, Mr. Stalin said: “In particular, when investigating crimes against women and children, you must handle them with the utmost care and approach ‘sensibly’. This is not just my request as the Chief Minister responsible for this department; it is an order that you must follow.”
“Similarly, you must adopt a ‘zero tolerance’ policy in preventing the movement and sale of narcotic substances. All of you have children in your homes. Realise that even if someone else is affected today, the danger of drugs could affect our own children tomorrow, and act with personal involvement,” he said.
Each police officer must take a resolution that they would not allow any crime to take place within their control. Mr. Stalin pointed out, “When news about a police officer doing good appears in the media, it brings pride to the entire department. Likewise, if even one police officer commits a mistake somewhere, it affects the trust that people place in the entire department. Realising this, each one of you must act with care and responsibility.”
“Saying that the police are friends of the public should not remain mere words or just a slogan — you must prove it in reality. As police officers, you should be easily approachable to the people and act with kindness. Your determination must be visible in the work you do. Use an iron hand to prevent crime, but when dealing with complainants, present yourselves with respect, smile, and genuine concern” said the Chief Minister while addressing the new recruits.
He also listed various welfare measures implemented for police personnel in the state. Since his government assumed office, a total of 17,330 personnel were selected and appointed to the Tamil Nadu Police Department — comprising 66 Deputy Superintendents of Police, 1,065 Assistant Sub-Inspectors, and 16,199 Grade II police constables.
In addition, 2,000 firefighters, 129 Station Officers, and 366 Grade II prison warders were selected and appointed through the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board. “We have also issued compassionate appointment orders to 1,532 dependents of personnel who served in the police department and passed away while in service,” said Mr. Stalin.
Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dheeraj Kumar, Director General of Police, Law and Order and Head of Police Force (Incharge) G.Venkataraman, Director General of Police (Fire and Rescue Service) Seema Agrawal were present on the occasion.
