Mariah Carey's three-decade long domination of Spotify's top songs of the season has come to an end. The syrupy sweet, or sickening for some, 'All I Want for Christmas' has been overtaken by Sia's 'Snowman' as the most streamed Christmas title.
The hit track comes her album 'Everyday Is Christmas '(2017) in which she commiserates a snowman who is about to melt to the first rays of sunshine. It's a slow, catchy piano-led pop ballad that has worked magic for many over the years but it's promotion to number one will no doubt see its spell charm more people.
Sia, who's full name is Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, began her musical journey in the 1990s with the acid jazz band Crisp before launching a solo career and shooting to stardom with the global hit 'Chandelier' in 2014.
As well as a career as a solo artist, Sia, 50, has become one of the music industry’s most successful behind-the-scenes songwriters. She penned chart-topping hits for artists including Rihanna ('Diamonds'), Beyoncé ('Pretty Hurts'), and Katy Perry.
Over her career, Sia has amassed an impressive list of honors. She has received nine Grammy Award nominations, as well as wins at the MTV Video Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards.
But, if you've not yet heard 'Snowman' or perhaps didn't know who was the voice behind the hit, now's your chance. Please don't say Euronews Culture never gives you anything.
It's far from doom and gloom however for Mariah Carey. Spotify says the American 56-year-old superstar retains her title of the most streamed Christmas song of all time and is second in the December streaming charts, Wham!'s 'Last Christmas' is third on the list giving Britain a place on the podium while Dean Martin's 'Let It Snow! Let It Snow!' and Andy Williams' 'It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year' round out the top five.
