National Farmers Day 2025: Know the date, history, importance, and significance of Kisan Diwas celebrated in India on December 23.
National Farmers Day in India 2025 Date and History: Kisan Diwas, also known as National Farmers’ Day, is an important observance in India that honours farmers as the backbone of the nation.
Indian farmers are revered as ‘annadaataa’, which means ‘giver of food’ in Sanskrit, making them an invaluable source for the country’s growth, economy, and prosperity.
National Farmers Day serves as a timely reminder to recognise farmers’ contributions, as well as the need for addressing farmers’ problems and improving their quality of life.
The day also commemorates the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, India’s fifth Prime Minister, who served from 1979–80, widely remembered as the “Champion of India’s Farmers” and renowned for his extensive understanding of rural issues and his steadfast advocacy for farmers’ rights and welfare.
It is celebrated on December 23 every year; this year, it is being observed on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, with no official announcement being made for the day yet.
Last year, the Government of India observed Kisan Diwas with the theme of “Empowering ‘Annadatas’ for a Prosperous Nation”.
Nonetheless, the day highlights the essential role that farmers play in India’s economy, rural development, and food security.
It allows participants to discuss critical issues such as fair pricing, climate change adaptation, sustainable farming methods, and access to modern technologies.
Additionally, it serves as a platform for raising awareness about government policies and actions aimed at improving farmers’ livelihoods.
