Vir Das is all set to make his directorial debut with Happy Patel, a film produced by Aamir Khan Productions. While this marks his first collaboration with the banner as a director, it is not his first association with Aamir. The actor-stand-up comedian previously worked with him in Delhi Belly, where he featured in the popular item number “Jaa Chudail”—a song that, according to Farah Khan, was apparently cut short by Aamir.
The conversation unfolded during Farah Khan’s recent visit to Vir Das’ home, where the two discussed Happy Patel at length.
Speaking about the film, Vir revealed that he drew multiple references from Farah’s 2008 blockbuster Om Shanti Om, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. “Anybody who likes Om Shanti Om will like this,” he said. He also compared Happy Patel to Farah’s Tees Maar Khan, starring Akshay Kumar, adding, “It’s a top spoof film like Tees Maar Khan.”
Vir Das went on to say that he places Happy Patel in the same space as the cult classic Andaz Apna Apna, featuring Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. Hearing this, Farah surprised him by saying, “When I watched Andaz Apna Apna back in the day, I knew it would be a huge flop—and it actually was.”
A visibly shocked Vir responded, “Andaz Apna Apna was a flop? Aamir never disclosed this to me.” He then quipped, “He only slaps. And he slaps hard,” referring to their playful banter in promotional videos for Happy Patel.
Farah laughed and replied, “Obviously, because you often hurt him with your words.”
She then added, “I am going to spill another secret,” before calling Vir’s wife, Shivani, and asking, “Did you know I was the choreographer of Vir’s item song Jaa Chudail in Delhi Belly?” Shivani quickly confirmed, saying it was “too much fun.” Farah agreed, adding, “It was too good, but Aamir Khan cut it short out of jealousy because his song was coming next.”
Vir recalled, “But I was told there were pacing issues,” to which Farah replied sarcastically, “Yeah, sure.”
Vir Das also shared his experience of working with Farah Khan’s team, saying, “Farah Khan’s team scares artistes a lot. They’re like, ‘This isn’t good enough for ma’am.’ But when Farah comes in, it’s completely the opposite. She’s the sweetest. She even sat and ate peanut butter with me.”
Farah added, “We had great fun shooting that song, and Vir is such a great dancer.”
Recalling another moment from the “Jaa Chudail” shoot, Vir said, “You put me in leather pants.” Farah laughed and agreed, “Yes—and that curly hair wig!” Vir then revealed, “And those were Aamir’s pants.”
A shocked Farah asked, “But how did you fit into Aamir’s pants?” Vir replied with a laugh, “I had to wear something extra…”
Wrapping up the conversation, Farah joked, “Aamir, we are exposing a lot of your secrets.”
Happy Patel, slated for release on January 16, will also mark the return of actor Imran Khan to the big screen.
