James Marsden's Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday teaser.

Marvel Studios has been releasing teasers of its next big tentpole, Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Doomsday for the past few weeks. While the two teasers already released confirm the return of two Avengers — Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers aka Captain America and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor — the third one teases a return that’s been a long time coming.

“X-Men will return in Avengers: Doomsday,” says the screen at the end of the third teaser. It starts with a voiceover of Patrick Stewart delivering a signature Charles Xavier monologue: “Death comes for us all. It’s all I know for sure. The question isn’t are you prepared to die? The question is: Who would you be when you close your eyes?”

Charles Xavier is seen measuring the damage done to the X-Mansion, the home of all X-Men, on his wheelchair. He’s then seen playing chess with someone, who is then revealed to be his ideological nemesis and old friend, Ian McKellen’s Magneto. The latter then gently holds Xavier’s hands, in a gesture to reassure him as they both stand in the face of death.

It’s not revealed whether the threat looming large is Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom or something else. But the stakes are higher than they probably have ever been. In the final shot, somewhere outside, James Marsden’s Scott Summers aka Cyclops is seen unleashing possibly the biggest kinetic energy blast from his eyes ever witnessed on screen.

If one looks closely, one can see what looks like a silhouette of the Sentinels walking in Cyclops’ background. Given their size, only their legs can be seen in the frame. It’s unclear which other X-Men will return for Avengers: Doomsday. Rumours suggest that after his return in Shawn Levy’s 2024 buddy movie Deadpool & Wolverine, Hugh Jackman’s Logan aka Wolverine will also be seen reuniting with his fellow X-Men.

Avengers: Doomsday is slated to release in cinemas on December 18.
