Telangana Tourism Department plans to develop places along rivers, reservoirs and natural landscapes as international wedding destinations. Minister Jupally Krishna Rao recently announced that Nagarjunasagar, Somasila and Baswapur would be developed for the purpose. The projects would be grounded this year. Anantagiri — where the government proposed ₹2,950 crore tourism project — too is on the list.

All the places have water bodies or reservoirs, which provide backgrounds, viewpoints for people to celebrate special occasions.

Tourism Department Managing Director Kranthi Valluru said that these regions were selected based on their proximity to water bodies or reservoirs, and natural and serene landscapes. While the government would develop the places, participation of private players in setting up hotels, tent cities and other places to accommodate people would be encouraged.

Currently, one of the places on a waterbody is ‘The Cove by Freakouts’ — which is located on an island in Laknavaram lake, Mulugu. The property has a banquet hall with 200-seating capacity and cottages. Director of the company, Vamsidhar Kothala, said that people can book the place to celebrate birthdays, engagements, get-togethers and other occasions. He said that a customised floating deck will be introduced soon to celebrate special occasions.

Earlier — at South Indian Wedding Planners Congress — forts, places, forests, rivers, lakes, hills and modern luxury hotels were pitched as wedding destinations.

Manisha Mehta of Gala Events based in Hyderabad, said that people from various cultures get married here and intercultural, inter-country weddings have multiplied. She said that Hyderabad has diverse landscape, modern infrastructure, and easy accessibility due to the Outer Ring Road, which could contribute to turning the city  into an attraction for weddings. Ms. Mehta suggested a wedding city be developed near the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport with packages including palace theme, sustainable weddings, royal weddings and others.
