Humans have distinct ways of dealing with heartbreaks and breakups. The Metro In Dino actor Sara Ali Khan is no different. The 29-year-old recently revealed her way to deal with heartbreaks or fights. “There is a list of things that you specifically do. But main bhaag jaati hun. (I run away). I have a not-a-great tendency to run when I don’t like..I went to the mountains last week…doesn’t mean I am heartbroken…I have a tendency of running away in general…whether it is a fight with mom (Amrita Singh) or Ibrahim (brother). I am not confrontational…I tend to run away.”
Taking a cue from her confession to podcaster Nayandeep Rakshit, let’s explore how some people deal with breakups by taking space.
This tendency to “run away” to nature reflects a common coping mechanism, where individuals seek solitude in familiar, calming environments to process their emotions, said Dr. Chandni Tugnait, psychotherapist, life alchemist, coach, and healer, founder and director of Gateway of Healing.

The healing power of disconnecting from the past: Instead of constantly revisiting the past, taking a break from memories can create emotional space. This isn’t about forgetting but creating a healthy distance to stop reliving the pain. “Sara’s tendency to retreat from her surroundings symbolises this need to disconnect to focus on rebuilding oneself,” said Dr Tugnait.
Reclaiming control through personal rituals: Establishing personal rituals, such as retreating to nature or engaging in creative activities, can help regain a sense of control after emotional turmoil. These rituals can serve as anchors in turbulent times, offering emotional stability and comfort.
Shifting focus from pain to passion: Instead of focusing on the hurt, a shift in focus toward something more productive is needed. “This could be pursuing a personal hobby, career growth, or something that brings joy. By redirecting energy toward passions and ambitions, it becomes easier to release the negative emotions associated with the breakup. This approach encourages individuals to transform their grief into an opportunity for self-improvement and rediscovery,” Dr Tugnait said.
Rebuilding self-identity and confidence: A breakup can sometimes shatter a person’s sense of self. “Taking the time to rebuild this identity is key to healing. The ability to cope with a breakup by taking time for yourself reflects the importance of rediscovering one’s individuality after losing it in a relationship,” shared Dr Tugnait.
