Bruce Willis and Emma Heming celebrate a low-key Christmas amid his dementia battle.

As Bruce Willis battles an advanced stage of dementia, his wife Emma Heming struggles with keeping the holiday spirit alive. In a decision made by Emma, the 70-year-old actor lives away from their daughters Mabel Ray, 13, and Evelyn Penn, 11, so that he gets 24*7 care while she looks after their daughters’ well-being.

But Bruce is very much a part of the family’s Christmas celebration. Emma wrote on her website, “For me, the holidays carry memories of Bruce being at the center of it all. He loved this time of year- the energy, family time, the traditions. He was the pancake-maker, the get-out-in-the-snow-with-the-kids guy, the steady presence moving through the house as the day unfolded.”

She acknowledged that while Bruce’s dementia battle has affected their family’s holiday traditions, she’s still making the best of the situation through a lot of planning. “Dementia doesn’t erase those memories. But it does create space between then and now. And that space can ache,” wrote Emma, adding, “I’ve learned that the holidays don’t disappear when dementia enters your life. They change.”

Looking back at how the Christmas celebration at the Willis’ has changed over the years, Emma wrote further, “Traditions that once felt somewhat effortless require planning- lots of planning. Moments that once brought uncomplicated joy may arrive tangled in a web of grief. Grief doesn’t only belong to death.”

Over a four-decade career, Bruce’ movies had earned more than $5 billion at the worldwide box office, with hits like Die Hard and The Sixth Sense. He was previously married to former co-star Demi Moore. They also have three daughters — Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31. However, Bruce and Demi divorced in 2000. He then tied the knot with Emma, a model, in 2009.

Rumer also shared pictures from a Christmas pyjama party on her Instagram handle. While the pictures had her sisters and mother, Bruce was missing. A blended family, Bruce’s ex-wife and their daughters often used to celebrate Christmas with his current wife and their daughters.

In 2022, Bruce’s family announced that he’s stepping away from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia. His condition progressed within months as he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia the next year. Earlier this year, as Bruce’s condition continued to worsen, Emma decided to live separately with her daughters while providing full care to her husband.

“We have two young children, and it was just important that they had a home that supported their needs and that Bruce could have a place that supported his needs,” she said in a statement. “They miss their dad so much. He’s missing important milestones, that’s tough for them,” Emma told Vogue Australia earlier this year.
