According to Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and diabetes educator, the nutritional value of an omelette depends on its ingredients. She told indianexpress.com that a plain egg-only omelette is almost similar to a boiled egg in terms of protein and calorie content.
“The best thing about an omelette is that it is highly customisable. You can increase its nutrient diversity by adding vegetables and healthy fats. A more filling option when loaded with fibre-rich veggies. Omelettes are best suited for those in need of a balanced meal in a single dish,” said Malhotra, further adding that additional ingredients like vegetables, cheese, or meat can significantly alter its nutritional profile.
“Adding veggies boosts fibre, vitamins (like vitamin C), and minerals (e.g., iron) is the way to go forward. However, cheese or excessive oil can increase calories and unhealthy fats,” she mentioned. Therefore, people managing their calorie or fat intake should avoid omelettes loaded with cheese, processed meats, or excessive oils.
