A petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday (May 13, 2025) seeking a direction to the Centre to “replace or fundamentally restructure” the National Testing Agency (NTA) following the cancellation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Undergraduate exam for medical admissions in 2026 in colleges across the country. Over 22 lakh students had appeared in the national exam.
The NEET was taken by 24 lakh candidates. Revised examination dates, together with the schedule for issuance of fresh admit cards, will be announced through the official channels of the Agency in due course. The NTA said, it is conscious that the decision to re-conduct the examination will impose substantial inconvenience upon candidates and their families.
Among the three exams that the NTA has conducts, JEE Main 2026 saw over 16 lakh registrations, NEET UG around 22.7 lakh, and CUET UG 15.68 lakh, totaling nearly 54.
2 per cent have been allotted their first choice of exam cities, National Testing Agency (NTA) data reveals. On April 26, the NTA will release the NEET UG 2026 admit cards with the exam centre details.
