Iran war may cause food shortages in Africa, world’s largest fertiliser firm says

The Iran war could have “dramatic consequences”, causing food shortages and price rises in some of Africa’s poorest and most vulnerable communities, the head of the world’s largest fertiliser company has said. Svein Tore Holsether, the chief executive of Yara International, said world leaders needed to guard against soaring prices and shortages of fertiliser causing a de facto global auction that would leave the poorest countries, particularly in Africa, scrambling for supplies they could ill afford. ” Only this week the EU announced it was loosening state subsidy rules for industries along with grant aid of up to €50,000 (£43,200) for individual farmers for the extra cost of fuel or fertiliser caused by the Iran war.

Russia claims its Africa Corps group prevented coup in Mali after rebels seize towns

Russia’s defence ministry has claimed its Africa Corps – the successor to the former Wagner mercenary group – prevented a coup in Mali over the weekend, avoiding mass civilian casualties and inflicting “irreplaceable losses” on rebel insurgents. Rebel forces in Mali over the weekend drove the Africa Corps from Kidal, launched an attack near the capital, Bamako, and killed defence minister Sadio Camara – a key Moscow ally – in an apparent suicide bombing. About 2,000 Russian troops are deployed in landlocked Mali under the Africa Corps banner, the successor to the Wagner group across much of the continent.

Africa particularly vulnerable as Iran conflict disrupts supply chains, say experts

Countries in Africa, where farmers depend heavily on imported fertiliser and a large share of household income goes on food, are particularly vulnerable to supply chain disruptions caused by the war in the Middle East, experts have said. Fertiliser prices have soared since the war started last month, and Unctad says that may increase food costs and intensify cost of living pressures, particularly for the most vulnerable people. “Any disruptions, any shocks really affect all of us,” said Jervin Naidoo, a political analyst at Oxford Economics Africa, an advisory firm.
