In a hit-and-run incident, a speeding BMW car rammed into a motorcycle on the dividing road between sectors 34 and 35 late Monday night, killing a food delivery executive on the spot.
The impact was so severe that the biker was flung several metres away and his head struck the road, leading to fatal injuries. The accused car driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.
The deceased was identified as 26-year-old Khushmeet Rawat, a native of Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh. He was currently living in a rented accommodation at Burail village, Sector 45. Khushmeet worked as a delivery executive with Swiggy.
As per the police, the accident occurred between 2 am and 2.30 am when Khushmeet was heading towards Sector 35 to deliver food orders. As he reached near the Sector 34/35 light point, a speeding BMW car hit his bike from behind. The force of the collision threw him onto the road, leaving him critically injured and bleeding profusely.
A passerby informed the police control room, following which a PCR team rushed to the spot and shifted the injured youth to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32. Doctors declared him brought dead. On Tuesday, after a postmortem examination, the body was handed over to his family members.
Khushmeet’s landlord, Sunny Sharma, said he had been living in the house for the past one and a half years. He preferred working at night as the number of orders is higher and the earnings are better. “About a year ago, I even helped him get married,” said Sharma.
Khushmeet’s wife, Aradhana, had stayed in Chandigarh for some time but later returned to her parental home in Hardoi. He had been living alone in the city since then.
The landlord said that just before the accident, Khushmeet’s friends had advised him not to go out late at night. As per Sharma, more orders come at night and the income is better. Sadly, he left for work and met with this accident.
A case was registered against the BMW driver at Sector 36 police station.
An eyewitness has provided the registration number of the BMW car to the police. However, when the police reached the address linked to the car, they found that it had already been sold to another person. Police are now scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the vehicle and identify the accused driver.
“We are analysing footage from multiple cameras,” a police officer said.
