Why it matters

The large-scale cancellations form part of a longer 30-day block period on Mumbai’s Western Railway network that began on December 20–21, 2025, and will continue till January 18, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • On the night of January 11–12, a block will be taken for the dismantling of Point No.
  • During this period, the Up Fast Line will be blocked from 11.15 pm to 3.15 am, while the Down Fast Line will remain blocked from 1 am to 4.30 am.On the following night of January 12–13, another major block has been scheduled at Kandivali.
  • Passengers are requested to take note of the changes and plan their journeys accordingly,” said Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway.

At least 120 suburban train services will be cancelled on January 12 (Monday) and January 13 (Tuesday), 2026, on Mumbai’s Western Railway network due to major night blocks and ongoing infrastructure work for the construction of the sixth railway line between Kandivali and Borivali.

According to Western Railway officials, the cancellations include 60 Up and 60 Down suburban services on both days, impacting peak commuter movement on one of the busiest sections of the Western line. The large-scale cancellations form part of a longer 30-day block period that began on the night of December 20–21, 2025, and will continue until January 18, 2026.

As part of the ongoing works, Western Railway will impose major night blocks on January 11–12 and January 12–13. On the night of January 11–12, a block will be taken for the dismantling of Point No. 104 on the car shed line at Kandivali. During this period, the Up Fast Line will be blocked from 11.15 pm to 3.15 am, while the Down Fast Line will remain blocked from 1 am to 4.30 am.

On the following night of January 12–13, another major block has been scheduled at Kandivali. For this work, the Up Fast Line will again be blocked from 11.15 pm to 3.15 am, and the Down Fast Line from 1 am to 4.30 am, affecting train movement between Kandivali and Malad.

Western Railway has stated that in addition to these blocks, the suspension of the fifth line and the imposition of speed restrictions in the affected section have further constrained operations, leading to the cancellation of a significant number of suburban services.

“These major blocks are essential for carrying out critical track and signalling works related to the construction of the sixth line between Kandivali and Borivali. The works involve dismantling existing points and connecting new crossovers, which are necessary for long-term capacity enhancement and smoother suburban operations. Passengers are requested to take note of the changes and plan their journeys accordingly,” said Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway.
