More than 170 people died in road accidents that took place during the year 2025 in Mysuru district.
Sharing these statistics with the media here on January 13, Vasanth Eshwar Chauhan, Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Mysuru West, said the city enjoys the dubious distinction of figuring in the list of top 10 districts accounting for the highest number of accidents in the State.
Abhay Manohar Sapre, chairman of the Supreme Court’s Road Safety Committee, visited Mysuru, considered to be one of the accident-prone districts, last month and issued necessary directions to the authorities to take measures to prevent accidents.
Describing a black spot as a 500-metre stretch of road where five accidents or 10 deaths have occurred in the last three years, Mr. Chauhan said action was proposed to be taken at 17 such black spots by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and three such black spots by the Public Works Department (PWD) in Mysuru district.
Pointing out that most victims of road accidents were youngsters aged between 25 and 40 years, Mr. Chauhan said the Transport Department will visit various educational institutions to create awareness among the youth about the road safety during January 2026, which is observed as Road Safety Month.
He cautioned people against over-speeding and reckless driving, helmet-less riding, drunken driving, and driving with bluetooth devices.
The total number of vehicles registered in Mysuru district so far is 12,15,212, he said.
During the financial year 2025-26, the Transport Department in Mysuru registered more than 2,370 cases against motorists who violated the rules under the Motor Vehicles Act, which covers traffic offences related to Fitness Certificate (FC), defective number plate, pollution certificate, Registration Certificate, and so on. The number of cases registered are expected to cross 3,000 by March-end this year, he added.
Meanwhile, the Transport Department undertook a drive to check sleeper buses in the wake of the recent sleeper-bus accident in Chitradurga where several people died.
The sleeper buses were checked for emergency windows, driver partition, glass-breaking hammer, fire extinguisher, and fire detection alarm.
“Buses found lacking in safety measures were issued with notices to rectify the same within 30 days,” he said.
