A 25-year-old call centre employee was found dead under a car near her home in Greater Noida after being allegedly strangled by a man whose proposal she had rejected.

A 28-year-old man was arrested in a shootout for allegedly strangling a 25-year-old woman to death in Greater Noida.

The woman was found dead under a car, barely 50 metres from her residence in Beta 2, on Monday night. Noida Police made the arrest late Tuesday night.

According to police, the accused, Ankit Kumar (28) allegedly killed the victim for not accepting his proposal. He is a resident of Jaitpur village in Surajpur, Greater Noida, and is a father of two children. He ran a fruit shop close to the woman’s home.

“On Monday, around 8 am, the woman’s body was found under a car, 50 metres away from her home, by a neighbour,” police said.

“She hailed from Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh and worked at a call centre in Noida’s Sector 52. She had moved to the Beta 2 society a year ago along with her 15-year-old brother, a Class 7 student. Her parents passed away. Another brother works in Jaipur,” officials said.

The woman’s sister-in-law said, “Around 3 am on Tuesday, I received a call from my brother-in-law that she had not reached home. We thought she might have gone to a friend’s home.”

When there was no sign of her by 7 am, the sister-in-law said she asked another relative in the Beta 2 society to look for the woman and was informed that her body had been found.

After a day of investigation, police said they tracked Kumar by scanning CCTV footage. “During questioning, Kumar claimed he came in contact with the woman when she used to come to his fruit shop. They had brief conversations. Kumar claimed he had fallen in love with her. Assuming she, too, liked him, he proposed to her but she refused. He then began pressuring her to accept his proposal,” said Sudhir Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Greater Noida.

The ADCP added, “On Tuesday, after buying vegetables, the woman was walking towards her home. The accused started following her and pressured her again. When she ignored him and kept walking, he got angry and strangled her between two parked cars and dragged her body under a car.”

Police said a case under Section 103 of the BNS has been registered against the suspect at Beta 2 police station.

Police said the body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem late Monday night and she was cremated on Tuesday. “The post-mortem report is awaited,” said Sudhir Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Greater Noida.
