Describing VB-G RAM G Act as an effective and pro-people legislation and terming the opposition to it as wrong, Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje has said that they (Centre) are ready for a public debate on the Act.
Addressing presspersons in Hubballi on Monday, the Union Minister said that already, G RAM G has become an Act and it has been sent to the Sates for adaption. However, only the Congress and INDI Alliance partners are opposing it, she said.
“The work of providing giving employment guarantee to the rural population began in 2005 and till date ₹10.66 lakh crore has been spent for the implementation of the scheme. While during the UPA regime 1,660 crore person days were created under the now repealed MGNREGA, under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA regime, 3,010 crore person days have been created to provide employment. While 153 lakh different works were carried out during the UPA regime, 852 lakh works have been carried out under the Modi regime,” she said.
Ms. Karandlaje said that because of fake job cards and irregularities in several States, funds meant for the erstwhile MGNREGA have been misused resulting in the registration of 10.50 lakh cases. There arose a need for revision of the scheme and now, it has been done after thorough verification and after incorporating suggestions from experts, she said.
The Minister sought to know from the Congress whether it is opposing the Act only over the change in the name of the scheme or for any other reason? “Several MPs from the Congress have welcomed the revised Act but are opposing for the sake of their party’s diktat. Only after an year-long exercise the revised Bill was brought in,” she said.
On Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s call for a public debate on the issue, she said that they (BJP-led Central government) are ready to debate if they a platform is provided.
On the State government’s move to convene a special legislature session on G RAM G Act, she said that the party leaders will decide on whether to attend the session or not.
MLA Mahesh Tenginakai and BJP State Disciplinary Committee president Lingaraj Patil were present.
