Born on October 15, 1968, Singhal, a BTech graduate, is a native of Rewari in Haryana and is due to retire on October 31, 2028.

1992-batch IPS officer Ajay Singhal was appointed on Wednesday as the Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana. The announcement comes as his batchmate, O P Singh, who was appointed as the state police chief in October this year as an additional charge, retired on Wednesday. Singh was given a farewell at Haryana Police Academy at Madhuban in Karnal.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had empanelled three IPS officers — Shatrujeet Singh Kapur (1990 batch), Ajay Singhal (1992 batch) and Alok Mittal (1993 batch) — from which the government considered Singhal for the post of DGP.

“On the consideration of the panel received from UPSC, the Governor of Haryana is pleased to appoint Ajay Singhal as Director General of Police, Haryana for a minimum tenure of at least two years from the date of his assumption of charge,” the orders issued by Dr Sumita Misra, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), read.

A meeting was convened by the UPSC at New Delhi, which was attended by Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi this afternoon. In the meeting, the panel comprising the three officers was approved by the UPSC and sent to the state government this evening.

After completing the formalities, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and other senior state government functionaries approved Singhal’s name as the new state DGP.

It was earlier this month when Singhal was appointed as Director General (State Vigilance Bureau) and chief of Haryana’s Anti-Corruption Bureau.

Mittal is currently Managing Director (Haryana Police Housing Corporation) with additional charge of Resident Commissioner (Haryana), while Kapur is Chairman of Haryana Police Housing Corporation.

Throughout his service career, Singhal had previously remained as Director General (Prisons) and also held key positions in the state police department across the state’s various districts.

In October this year, Haryana Police got embroiled in a major controversy with two back-to-back suicides —- IPS officer Y Puran Kumar on October 7 followed by ASI Sandeep Kumar Lathar on October 14. The events led to then DGP Kapur proceeding on leave and appointment of O P Singh as DGP (additional charge).

Being the senior most among the Haryana cadre IPS officers, Saini and top state government functionaries decided to finalise Singhal as the state police chief.

While Mittal is due to retire on June 30, 2029, Kapur is due to retire on October 31, 2026.
