Why it matters

One Battle After Another picked up the most film awards at the 2026 Golden Globes Jan.

Key takeaways

  • 11, winning Best Picture, Musical/Comedy as well as Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress.
  • She also shared a heartfelt thank you to the film’s assistant director Adam Somner, who died from thyroid cancer on Nov.
  • 27, 2024 at the age of 57.“I wanna agree with Paul that this has been one of the most incredible filmmaking experiences,” she shared.

She also shared a heartfelt thank you to the film’s assistant director Adam Somner, who died from thyroid cancer on Nov. 27, 2024 at the age of 57.

“I wanna agree with Paul that this has been one of the most incredible filmmaking experiences,” she shared. “Once in a lifetime, due largely in part to the person that we share this award with, the late Adam Somner, who we miss everyday.”

Paul also gave a shoutout to Adam during his speech for Best Director, calling him “the best” assistant director one could ever have.

“It’s underselling it what he did for me and for us and for this film,” Paul said. “He’s why I’m standing here. He’s what made making this so much fun. I think it made you all seem to enjoy it the way you have.”

Going into the ceremony, many fans were surprised that Wicked: For Good was left off the list of Best Picture, Musical or Comedy nominees, although it still picked up five nominations including ones for stars Cynthia Erivo for Best Actress and Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress.

Meanwhile, One Battle After Another was the most nominated film of the evening, also scoring nominations for Best Original Score, as well as Best Actor and Actress noms for Leonardo and Chase.

The movie also marked the first time Leo and PTA worked together, with the Oscar winner explaining the writer-director was the reason behind his desire to join the cast.

“Ultimately, wanting to do this movie was pretty simple,” Leonardo shared with the Phantom Thread filmmaker during a joint Esquire interview in August, “I’ve been wanting to work with you—Paul—for something like twenty years now, and I loved this idea of the washed-up revolutionary trying to erase his past and disappear and try and live some sort of normal life raising his daughter.”
