Anil Singh, who works as a bodyguard to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, said that while he was in Delhi with the minister, he received a call from Mumbai informing him that his son had been assaulted on a train after an argument with another passenger.

He immediately informed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who then contacted the Maharashtra government and other officials.

Alok Singh had been living in Mumbai with his brother since childhood. He completed his education in the city and was working as a professor at a college in Mumbai. He got married three years ago and was known as a kind person.

On the day of the incident, it was his wife’s birthday. Alok was returning home early from college to celebrate with her when the attack took place.

Anil Singh said his son might have survived if the police had taken him to a nearby hospital in time for treatment. He said he is inconsolable with grief.

Alok’s sister, Pooja Singh, said she raised her brother since childhood and that he grew up holding her hand. She described him as a caring and patient brother and said she still cannot accept that she is speaking about him in the past tense. 

She added that her sister-in-law is in trauma and unable to cope with the loss.

What happened at Malad station?

The incident took place on Saturday near Malad Railway Station in Mumbai. A minor argument broke out between Alok Singh, a 32-year-old college lecturer, and another passenger while getting off a moving local train. The dispute quickly turned violent.

The accused, Omkar Shinde, pulled out a sharp knife after stepping onto the platform and stabbed Alok Singh multiple times in the abdomen. As Singh collapsed in a pool of blood, the attacker escaped into the crowd.

Alok Singh was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police investigation and arrest

The Borivali Government Railway Police registered a murder case immediately and launched a large search operation. Five police teams were formed, each with five to six officers. Investigators examined footage from hundreds of CCTV cameras at the station, nearby areas and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Police found that the accused followed a fixed daily routine. He usually took a train from Malad at 7:18 am to Charni Road and returned at 4:16 pm. CCTV footage was checked from several locations, including Andheri, Bandra, Mumbai Central, Dindoshi and Kurar.

The accused was later spotted in Malad’s Triveni Nagar area. Police activated local sources and placed a team near the Malad auto-rickshaw stand to track his movements.

Although police believed the accused might not come out on Sunday, surveillance continued. At around 7.40 am, Omkar Shinde was seen getting down from an auto-rickshaw near Malad station. He was arrested on the spot and taken to the GRP office in Borivali.

During questioning, police showed him CCTV footage of a man running from the foot overbridge after the attack. Shinde identified himself in the footage and confessed to the murder.

The arrest was made within 12 hours of the crime, with the help of CCTV cameras, facial recognition technology and the accused’s routine pattern.
