A day after a gig worker was killed in a hit-and-run accident, police said on Wednesday that they are yet to trace the accused as the BMW car, allegedly involved in the crash, had been sold twice.
According to police sources, the vehicle involved in the fatal accident has been identified, but the driver is yet to be arrested. Police have found that the car was sold by its previous owner around a week before the accident. However, the new owner reportedly did not get the vehicle registered in his name, creating confusion over its current ownership.
The current owner, who is yet to be traced, is believed to be a resident of Punjab. Based on this information, police teams have been dispatched to Punjab to locate the seller and verify the ownership trail.
“Only after tracing the present owner of the BMW will we be able to establish who was driving the car at the time of the accident,” a police officer said. Once the ownership is confirmed, the driver who hit the victim can be identified and arrested, the official added.
The accident occurred between 2 am and 2.30 am when Khushmeet Rawat (26), a Swiggy delivery executive, was riding his motorcycle towards Sector 35 to deliver food orders. As he reached near the Sector 34/35 light point, a speeding BMW rammed into his bike from behind.
The impact was so severe that Khushmeet was flung several metres onto the road and suffered critical head injuries. The driver of the BMW fled the spot immediately after the accident.
A passerby informed the police control room, following which a PCR team rushed the injured youth to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
After the postmortem examination on Tuesday, the body was handed over to his family members.
Khushmeet, a native of Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh, had been living in a rented accommodation at Burail village, Sector 45.
