Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has strongly condemned the reported controversial slogans raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on campus premises during a late-night event on Monday. The University said that students found guilty of having raised controversial slogans against PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will face “disciplinary measures including immediate suspension, expulsion and permanent debarment from the University”.
The statement comes after the University sought the registration of an FIR in connection with the incident.
Students “associated with the JNUSU” had organised a programme to observe the sixth anniversary of the 2020 violence, under the title “A Night of Resistance with Guerrilla Dhaba,” according to a letter from university’s Security Department to the Vasant Kunj (North) Police.
According to the letter, around 30-35 students, including four JNUSU members, had gathered at the event, organised around 10 pm, on January 5. While initially the gathering “appeared to be limited to commemorating the said anniversary…the nature and tone of the gathering changed significantly” after Supreme Court’s denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.
The Supreme Court reject the bail pleas of Khalid and Imam, citing “hierarchy of participation” in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots case.
“The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration has vowed the strictest action against students found raising objectionable slogans against Hon’ble Prime Minister and Hon’ble Home Minister…Universities are centres for innovation and new ideas, and they cannot be permitted to be converted into laboratories of hate,” the varsity wrote on its X handle.
But any form of violence, unlawful conduct or anti-national activity will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Students involved in this incident will also face disciplinary measures including immediate suspension, expulsion and permanent debarment from the University.

“Freedom of speech and expression is a fundamental right. But any form of violence, unlawful conduct or anti-national activity will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” it added.
Official sources in the administration told The Indian Express that an inquiry into the incident was still at a preliminary stage and “more will be added subject to inquiry.”
