Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla Tuesday announced that there is a likelihood of introducing monthly parking passes for the city’s sector-based parking lots from mid-January in the New Year. In another important move, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has decided to implement its ambitious pan-city 24×7 water supply project in a phased manner.

Addressing the MC House meeting, Babla said: “Monthly passes will be implemented for parking lots across Chandigarh’s sectors. The fee will be ₹500 for a four-wheeler, while a monthly pass for a two-wheeler has been fixed at ₹250.”

The mayor stated: “We are hopeful of issuing these parking passes from mid-January 2026, once all formalities are completed. This initiative is expected to generate annual revenue of ₹20–25 crore.”

A recent survey revealed that nearly 70 per cent of residents supported the idea of a ₹500 monthly pass for cars, applicable at all paid sites. Currently, parking passes are limited to selected locations and cost ₹420 for cars and ₹210 for two-wheelers.

The committee concerned has also recommended introducing both monthly and quarterly passes for cars and two-wheelers, with unlimited entry and exit, to simplify the parking process, improve public convenience, and boost municipal revenue.

After the House meeting, Babla told The Indian Express that the monthly passes would be valid at all parking lots across Chandigarh, whether in markets or residential areas.

Stating that the civic body will implement its ambitious pan-city 24×7 water supply project in phases, Babla said the corporation will not take a loan for it. “We will continue implementing it according to the availability of funds.”

Public health officials had drafted eight options for consideration of the House. In one of the options, the officials had proposed to implement 24×7 water supply fully in one selected zone using currently available funds. “This would include complete pipeline replacement, smart meters and upgradation of water works, ensuring measurable and reliable outcomes. A zone-specific revised detailed project report would be prepared and approved by competent authorities. This model zone would serve as a benchmark for phased expansion across the city as funds become available,” an official note had mentioned.
