The punishment, which was revealed on their now-defunct Eight Passengers YouTube page, sent shockwaves through their fandom. In fact, it led to change.org petition that amassed over 18,000 signatures urging Child Protective Services to investigate the family.
"My bedroom was taken away for seven months," Chad said in the 2020 YouTube video alongside his mom. "I've sleeping on a beanbag since October and they gave me my room back two weeks ago."
As for what the prank was? He admitted that he had woken up his little brother "at 2 in the morning and told him that we're going to Disneyland and he has to pack. He got up and made his bed all neatly and packed all his clothes in the suitcase and he walked out the door."
Ruby, however, was unamused at Chad's laughter as he told the story.
"Do you think it's funny?" she asked him. "Because if you think it's funny, that was seven months ago, maybe you need longer without a bedroom."
Three years later, Ruby—who offered life-coaching service through their ConneXions channel with Jodi—was arrested after one of her and ex-husband Kevin Franke's younger sons escaped Jodi's Utah home and ran to a neighbor for help. According to police, the tween was malnourished and had duct-taped wounds around his ankles and wrists.
When Ruby was given her prison sentence in 2024, she shared a tearful apology with her kids for her "distorted version of reality" that "went largely unchecked."
"To my babies, you are a part of me," she continued in an address to her kids in the courtroom. "I believed dark was light and right was wrong. I would do anything in this world for you. I took from you all that was soft, and safe, and good."
