A MAN accused in a rioting case allegedly attacked a police team with a knife while in custody during reconstruction of the crime scene in Surendranagar on Tuesday after which he was shot and injured on the right leg, police said.

The incident took place between 5 pm and 6 pm in Shiyani village in Limbdi, police said. The accused, Divyaraj alias Bull Shiva Borana, was booked  on December 2 on charges of rioting, among other BNS sections, after he along with others allegedly attacked a shop owner at his residence over purchase of grains.

On Tuesday, the Limbdi police took him to the site where he had allegedly stashed a kuhaadi (axe) used in the commission of the crime, to carry out reconstruction panchnama, when he allegedly attacked the police with a chhari (knife), also stashed at the hiding place, leading to  a sub-inspector, V M Kodiyatar, firing his weapon and injuring Borana on the right leg.

On the incident itself, Surendranagar SP Premsukh Delu told The Indian Express, “This accused has several previous FIRs against him. During reconstruction of the crime scene, he showed the police team the weapons he used during the clash. While the seizure process was underway, he picked up a chhari (knife) and attacked the police team.”

SP Delu added, “In response, the sub-inspector drew his service pistol and fired five rounds, of which one hit the accused in the right leg below the knee. He was sent to a government hospital in Limbdi immediately for treatment.” Borana was later moved to CU Shah Medical College and Hospital in Surendranagar for further treatment.

Borana would be booked for attempt to murder in a second FIR that would be registered at Limbdi police station, said DySP VM Rabari of Limbdi Division.

DySP Rabari, speaking on Borana, told the Indian Express, “There are a total of 13 previous cases against Divyaraj Borana including assault, prohibition, gambling, as well as rioting. When he was caught on December 28, he was already wanted in three separate cases including the rioting case, one for prohibition, and one for criminal intimidation.
