An 18-month-old child, who was battling injuries for nearly two weeks after being hit allegedly by a speeding car in Mauli Jagran, Chandigarh, lost his life during treatment on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on January 1 near the Sundar Nagar light point in Mauli Jagran, when the car allegedly rammed into an e-rickshaw, throwing the toddler onto the road and causing fatal head injuries. The child succumbed to injuries at the PGIMER.

According to police, a case has been registered at Mauli Jagran police station under Sections 106(1), 125(a) and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on the complaint of Raju, the deceased child’s father and a resident of Sundar Nagar, Mauli Jagran.

The FIR has been lodged against the unidentified driver of a car who fled the spot after hitting the e-rickshaw.

Raju, a car mechanic by profession, told the police that on January 1, he along with his wife, two children, brother and his family had gone to visit Mata Mansa Devi temple. After offering prayers, the family boarded an e-rickshaw to return home. Around 2 pm, when the e-rickshaw was crossing the Sundar Nagar light point after passing through village Daria from the railway station side, a white car coming from the Hallo Majra side hit the e-rickshaw from the right without honking.

The impact was so severe that the e-rickshaw overturned, trapping Raju and his family underneath. During the chaos, Raju’s 18-month-old son, Pratik, who was sitting in his lap, fell onto the road and suffered serious head injuries. Raju also sustained injuries in the mishap.

The injured child was rushed to PGIMER, Chandigarh, where he was admitted for treatment. Police said both Raju and his son had been admitted to PGI after the accident. While Raju is undergoing treatment, his son could not survive.

Based on Raju’s statement, police registered a case against the car driver, who escaped from the scene. CCTV footage from the surrounding areas is being scanned to identify the accused vehicle and its driver.

The investigation is in progress and efforts are being made to trace and arrest the accused driver at the earliest, a police official said.
