In a significant relief for residents of sectors 76 to 80 in Mohali, the Punjab Cabinet has approved a major reduction in long-pending enhancement charges, bringing substantial financial relief to thousands of allottees. Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, addressing a press conference on Tuesday, said the Cabinet has approved an additional relief of Rs 109 per square metre, reducing the payable amount to Rs 2,216 per sq meter.
Earlier, GMADA had issued enhancement notices demanding Rs 3,164 per square metre from allottees. Following sustained efforts and meetings led by Kulwant Singh, the rate was first reduced to Rs 2,325 per square metre. Now, after the latest Cabinet decision approved by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the final payable amount stands at Rs 2,216 per square metre. A formal notification is expected shortly, after which GMADA will issue fresh notices asking residents to deposit the revised amount. “This is a New Year gift for the residents. People will now get major relief, and I urge all allottees to deposit the amount promptly once the notification and notices are issued, to avoid any future interest,” Kulwant Singh said.
He added that for nearly 15–20 years, residents were misled for political gain. “When GMADA initially prepared enhancement notices, some leaders deliberately blocked their delivery to avoid public scrutiny. As a result, the amount kept increasing with interest,” Singh alleged. The MLA said a breakthrough came after discussions with GMADA Chief Administrator, leading to a sharp reduction in rates saving each allottee several lakh rupees. He also clarified that no penalty or interest would be charged from those who have not yet paid, while those who already deposited penalties would receive a refund or adjustment.
Singh held former minister Balbir Sidhu responsible for the issue, alleging that enhancement notices were stalled during his 15-year tenure as MLA, causing the amount to nearly triple between 2008 and 2025. “I have always stood with the people of Mohali, and reducing their financial burden was my responsibility,” he said.
