A property dealer was arrested by Ahmedabad City Police on Thursday for allegedly impersonating a public servant and calling in a patrol vehicle from a police station using the name “police sub-inspcteor Rathod from Mehsana.”
The accused, Tarun B Brahmbhatt from Patan, was arrested by the Gujarat University police after personnel at the police station he contacted to send ‘backup’ grew suspicious and made enquiries about “PSI Rathod”.
The FIR was filed at Gujarat University police station on Thursday night on the basis of a complaint by the Police Station Officer (PSO) Kalaji Bavaji. Brahmbhatt was booked under BNS section 204 for impersonating a public servant.
The FIR stated that PSO Bavaji received a call from the PSO of Navrangpura police station on December 17, who told him that “PSI Rathod” called them regarding an accused in the jurisdiction of Gujarat University police station. When Kalaji Bavaji called the phone number, the person on the other end told him, “I am PSI Rathod from Mehsana,” and asked him whether an address near Memnagar fire station was in his jurisdiction.
When Kalaji replied in the affirmative, the accused asked him to send a police vehicle to that address and give his number to the team in the vehicle.
The police team in PCR-20 went and returned to the police station and shared their suspicions that this PSI Rathod was fake.
Kalaji then became suspicious himself and investigated if any officer by the name of PSI Rathod was posted in Mehsana. There was nobody by that name. This led to the filing of the FIR and Brahmbhatt’s arrest.
‘B’ Division ACP H M Kansagra told mediapersons, “When the police found that nobody by the name of PSI Rathod was posted with Mehsana Police, the mobile number holder was booked for impersonation and placed under arrest.”
