A shocking murder has come to light weeks after a woman married her long-time partner, with police alleging that she killed her husband with the help of her parents.

Jyoti, and the victim, Jitendra Kumar Yadav married on November 25, last year. They married in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly, after being in a relationship for nine-years.

33-year-old Jitendra Kumar Yadav was found hanging in a rented house in the city’s Izzatnagar area after two months of his marriage. The house is located in Girja Shankar Colony in the Izzatnagar area, where Jitendra had been living with Jyoti since their marriage. He was originally from Bhaupora village in Etawah district.

Initially, his death raised no alarm. Neighbours were told that Jitendra died by suicide.

However, the post-mortem examination revealed that strangulation was the cause of death. Police said Jitendra was strangled by his wife while his father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law held him down, NDTV reported.

The body was then hung from a window grill using a muffler to make it appear as a suicide. Three of the accused have been arrested, while the brother-in-law is still absconding.

According to the police, the relationship between Jyoti and Jitendra began to sour within weeks of the wedding, primarily over money. Police alleged that Jitendra withdrew Rs 20,000 from Jyoti’s bank account and lost the money in online gambling, leading to frequent arguments between the couple.

On January 26, when Jyoti confronted her husband over the missing money, the argument escalated into a physical fight, after which she allegedly called her parents and brother to their rented home.

According to the police, Jyoti’s father, Kalicharan, mother Chameli, and brother Deepak reached the house after her call. During the ensuing confrontation, police claim, the parents and brother restrained Jitendra, holding his arms and legs, while Jyoti strangled him.

Police said that after Jitendra stopped responding, the family tried to cover up the murder. His body was allegedly tied with a muffler and hung from a window or ventilator grill to stage a suicide, after which they raised an alarm claiming he had hanged himself.

During questioning, police said Jyoti confessed to the crime and narrated the sequence of events leading to her husband’s death. She told investigators that she and Jitendra had known each other since their student days. Jitendra worked as a contract employee at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly, while Jyoti was employed as a contract bus conductor with the Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation, NDTV reported.

According to her statement, frequent financial disputes had intensified tensions between the couple in the weeks after their wedding. On the day of the incident, she said, the argument escalated, leading her to call her family.

Police allege that during the fight, Jyoti’s parents and brother held Jitendra down, allowing her to strangle him “in a fit of rage." After his death, they reportedly staged the scene to make it appear as a suicide.

Later, a complaint was filed by Jitendra’s brother, Ajay Kumar. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case of abetment to suicide against Jyoti and three others and ordered a post-mortem examination.
