At the time, the father and son duo opened up about how the film impacted their complicated dynamic.
“It only brought us closer together,” Rob—who was also dad to Jake Reiner, 34, and Romy Reiner, 27, with Michele and Tracy Reiner, 41, with Penny Marshall—said at a Build Series event in 2016. “It was like over a period of a year. It was intense. It was difficult at times. But it was also the most satisfying, creative experience I’ve ever had.”
And Nick had only good things to say about working with the When Harry Met Sally director.
“It wasn’t very tough,” he shared. “It was pretty nice to experience for me. I don’t really think it was tough at all.”
However, Rob had admitted they butted heads at times while working as a team.
“I mean, we did get into fights over things but ultimately it forced us to make the film better,” he revealed. “I mean, you know, we’d get into issues and I would see.”
But even with their periodic rifts, Rob felt like working on the film together brought them closer together, adding, “The whole process for me, I can just speak for myself, it did make me understand him a lot more and I think it made me a better father. Hopefully it did, I don’t know.”
In the final scene of the film, Charlie and his father (played by Rob’s Princess Bride collaborator Cary Elwes) attempt to make peace with their fraught relationship, a sentiment that Rob felt all too personally.
“If your kid is going through rough times, your main job is to keep your child safe,” he explained. “I felt at a loss. So, I would do anything that, as we say in the film, ‘anybody with a desk and a diploma,’ I would listen to them. And the whole idea of tough love and you have to be a certain way and it’s not my nature. It’s not the way I am built, but I went and did that.”
The father of four continued, “And I think that at the end of the day, I know my child better than an expert does and I probably should have trusted my own instinct. And that’s one of the things I did learn about the whole experience.”
