Construction activities at Gap-2 of the Polavaram Irrigation Project gathered pace on Tuesday with the formal launch of stone-filling works. Water Resources Department officials, along with representatives of Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL), performed traditional puja rituals at the site before commencing the operations. Stone-filling in the downstream segment of Gap-2 had already begun after the ground was strengthened and stabilised. Tuesday’s ceremony marked the formal start of similar works in the upstream segment. Water Resources Department DEEs D. Srinivas, Venkataramana and Prem Chand, and MEIL General Manager A. Gangadhar said the works were progressing in line with government-set targets. They said the project was being taken up in a planned and systematic manner to ensure timely completion. Officials said ground-strengthening and stone-laying have begun in the upstream portion of Gap-2, while soil-filling is under way on both sides of the diaphragm wall. Construction in Gap-1 is also continuing as per the approved schedule, according to a press release from MEIL.
