Varanasi Police Bolster Security at Kashi Tamil Sangamam with Advanced Drone Surveillance
The Varanasi district police have significantly enhanced security measures for the ongoing Kashi Tamil Sangamam, now in its fourth edition, through the deployment of a state-of-the-art fleet of new-generation drones. This strategic move aims to ensure the safety and security of attendees and the smooth operation of the cultural event, which celebrates the historical and cultural ties between Varanasi and Tamil Nadu.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the Varanasi Commissionerate, Saravanan Thangamani, highlighted the importance of this technological upgrade, stating that a dedicated 10-member drone team is actively managing the surveillance efforts. The team is responsible for monitoring the venue and surrounding areas, providing real-time data to law enforcement personnel to quickly address any potential security concerns.
"We are using new-generation drones. Last year, there was usage of drones, but it was minimal. We are using three types of drones which are mini drones, micro drones and nano drones," Mr. Thangamani told the PTI, emphasizing the upgrade from previous security measures. The deployment of these varied drone types allows for comprehensive coverage and tailored responses to different security needs.
Drones Deployed for Surveillance
The drone fleet consists of three primary types, each possessing unique capabilities tailored to specific surveillance requirements:
- Mini Drones: These drones are notable for their self-charging capabilities, allowing for continuous, round-the-clock operation. Unlike battery-dependent models that require frequent replacements or downtime, the mini drones can maintain constant surveillance in designated areas. "This drone has the capability to run 24x7 and ensure constant surveillance in a region," Mr. Thangamani explained.
- Macro Drones: Designed for extensive area monitoring, the macro drones can effectively cover a vast 2-kilometer radius. This makes them particularly useful for surveying large open spaces and areas that are difficult to access on foot. "It can cover a larger area and will be used in the jungle behind the NaMo Ghat (multi-level riverfront development on the Ganges in Varanasi)," said Mr. Thangamani, who also serves as the Nodal Officer for the Kashi Tamil Sangamam event.
- Nano Drones: These compact drones are equipped to capture high-resolution images of suspicious activities. Their agility and discreet size allow them to closely monitor specific targets without attracting undue attention. Mr. Thangamani provided an example: if a car is parked in an area for an unusually long time, this drone scans the vehicle and shares the image with the police. "Based on the images it shares, we take action."
The strategic deployment of these drones reflects the Varanasi police's commitment to leveraging technology for enhanced security. The real-time data provided by the drones is immediately shared with senior police officials, enabling swift and informed decision-making. This integrated approach ensures that any potential threats are quickly identified and addressed, contributing to a safe and secure environment for the Kashi Tamil Sangamam.
